A Database must have data...data is submitted or entered in the Database...it
becomes available and useful...browse-able,
search-able, surf-able, find-able. All this depends on how easy it is
to navigate...how "able" it is designed.

BROWSING is Searching without any real
time stress added...nothing definite in mind...just exploring...following
your nose or your tastes...or being led along by resource sites as they
appear in website links collections.
Say, for example, you set out to explore courses available at your State
University...on the way you bump into something interesting and it invites
you to detour...maybe to another campus offering marine courses...maybe
to Anatomical Drawing lessons, or an obscure display or an open day,
or a call for volunteers at an Archaeological dig...then you're Browsing
the Web.
GO:
......to start ANY KIND OF SEARCH
of ADU's databases...or from there to beyond,
click on the "SEARCH ADU" link on any page.
In this tutorial, we've done so on the front or "Home page"of
the site. This takes you to........
|
| |
 |
- ....the
"Search Selection" page. Here you select the KIND
of SEARCH that you want to make.
Click on "BROWSE" link. This takes you to.....
|
| |
|
 |
- ....the
"Browse page", where you start to aim
your search, if it needs one....make a choice...you
can select only ONE
major category in ADU Browse mode...click on the box opposite
your selection and a "tick" appears...
- Note:
this page presents the same double
list that appears for anyone submitting new information to ADU as an
Arts Individual or an Arts Business. These contributors have created
records for public reference and community education...and for their
own promotion. They have identified themselves by Major Category, then
sub-categories, then location and name...from the general to the specific.
- Note:
browsing
and searching in general is understanding the "IN" process
and applying that to the "OUT" process.
- ...now
scroll to the bottom of this Search / Browse
page...
|
- ...and
select "Australia" from the "drop-down" list
of Countries Downunder ...if you don't check a country, your
search result will be a list as long as the total Database contents
for that category...ALL Countries.
|
- Let's see what happens
if you click
the "Find Records" button at the bottom of the page
at left...without first selecting the last option of State
/ Province...
|
| |
|
 |
- ....the
"Browse Results" page appears...it shows ALL
the entries for the category you selected in Australia...a daunting
list in most searches. Narrow your field of
search by clicking your Browser's "Back"
button...
|
| |
|
 |
- ...this
takes you back one step, cancelling your earlier click on the "Find
Records" button. This time type the first
letter of a State, and click "Find Records"
again...
|
| |
|
 |
- ....this
time the results are more manageable.
You have a list of all that has been entered as Australian, in the State
of your choice, and related to a particular category of Artistic or
creative interest. Click on anything you think may be rewarding or interesting
and go on from there....this is definitely
a leisure activity.
- Note:
this is as far as you can "narrow
your search" in "Browse ADU" mode...you
can't add any more search details...there are no more fields to fill-in,
or drop-down lists to choose from. For
more accurate or specific results you must search for "Arts Individuals",
"Arts Business", or "Arts Event".
Visit the "Search" tutorial now that you're familiar with
the general principle of Browsing the World Wide Web.
- Note:
the search results are arranged in pages, with the most recent addition
or up-date at the top of the first page.
- Note:
If you browse the Arts from the ADU site,
you can use your Browser's "Back" button to get back to ADU's
"Search Results" page where you will be able to continue browsing
other entries in that Category, Nation,
and State .
- Note:
the pastime of "Browsing" the Internet is very time absorbing
and mid-drift enlarging. Beware. Balance
your on-line time with useful exercise outdoors.
