A Database must have data...data is submitted or entered in the Database...it becomes available and useful...
browse-able, search-able, surf-able, find-able. All this depends on how easy it is to navigate...how "able" it is designed.

This tutorial has two pages.

The "Submit ADU" link creates a brand new record.

The front or "Home Page" of artsdownunder.com has lists of the most recently submitted or changed records under five headings: "Arts Individual", "Arts Business", "Arts Event", "Much ADU" and "Visitors Book". The entries are not in alphabetical order...but chronological. The one at the top is the most recently submitted or modified record... this allows records to remain in immediate view as long as they are regularly modified..the reward for "up-dating"...and are useful to those with "emergency" last-minute information about changed schedules, cancellations...as well as commercial promotions...art sales...reminders...comments...and contact.

GO:

......to start ANY KIND of SUBMISSION to ADU's databases,
click on the "Submit ADU" link on any page. In this tutorial, we've done so on the front or 'Home page' of the site. This takes you to........

  • ....the "Submission Selection" page. Here you select the KIND of submission that you want to make. Click on "SUBMIT AS AN ARTS INDIVIDUAL". This takes you to.....

  • ....the "Submit as Arts Individual" page, where you start to enter your details....

  • Note: as an individual person involved in some way in the arts, you are creating a record in the Public Domain...enter exactly what you're prepared to share with everyone...contact details, promotional information, and details from your CV...your Curriculum Vitae. Entering a name in the "Business Name" text box will automatically add your record to the Arts Business database as well...allowing you to be found by searches in both areas.

  • Note: selecting the "Arts Business" record is for those people who wish to add the details of an organisation, institution or business that is in some way involved in the arts. An event venue entered in this database will add address details to Events records having that Business Name in their Venue text box.

  • Note: an "Arts Event" record can be created for each separate event that occurs. These are linked to the business data base if the Venue of the event is listed as a Business Name and has the same City / Suburb/Town in each record.

  • ...IMPORTANT...when entering data as a business or as an individual, you have the functions of an extra four text boxes to utilise. These activate "Quicklinks" and "Showcase".
    If
you have an Web Artsite of your own that includes URL addresses for the most often up-dated information there...news, calendars, forms, and a dedicated "Showcase" page, then you can make use of these facets of ADU.
If you don't have such linkables, make sure you CLEAR (select and delete) the http://www. detail in each text box.

  • The upper part of this page is easy to follow...type in the data where you can. If you have a Website, include the complete address...this is why the hint is there...if you don't have a site, you won't be able to make use of "Quicklinks" or "Showcase"....so make sure to "clear" the fields (select and delete http://www. from the four fields). When you have a site, return and add your URLs.

  • Scroll down the page. Here is a list of Major Arts Categories with buttons for checking selections. Next to each of these is a list of Sub-Categories.
Read the Major Category Headings and click on one or more as you go down the page.
If you're a Painter or Sculptor or a Photographer, you are a Visual Artist...so click all that best describe your skills...be complete without being opportunist. Now pay attention to the Sub-category lists opposite your choices....

  • Note: be aware that you will appear in separate searches for each of these, not just in your main Art field. If you are known for charcoal drawings, or landscape photography or book illustration, type them into the large text box at the base of the page...do not use "and" and "the"..or commas.

  • ...these collections of related words are by no means exhaustive... they are presented to allow you to grasp the best definition of yourself and to summarise it in the Sub Category text box below the lists. If you have another word for yourself, type it in...someone will search for it sometime. You can copy and paste-in selected words, but remember these lists are included to supply a prompt, and typing-in your own skill and interest description is a more valuable discipline in itself. Most whittle the summary down to ten or so words, but you can use as many as you feel necessary.

  • Note: these Sub-Category words do not have to be English...but if you do include non-English words, type in the English equivalent as well.

  • Now you've only the three large text boxes (Fields) left to enter data in...the "Promotional Information"...the "CV Highlights" and the "Current Projects" text boxes....again...it's so much easier to copy and paste prepared information.

  • Note: there is also no reason your entry must be in English, but it's usefulness would be limited. There is no reason against having two or more identical entries in different languages...in fact it is welcomed...this field is the largest and will be the heart of any submission...for Individuals, businesses, and for events.

  • Note: although you can type in the information here, it is better to prepare your entry first and copy and paste to the whole field at the one time...it's quicker if you've already checked and edited it, and, most importantly, you have a back-up copy if something goes wrong. For more about making and using an ADU Management Folder see references in the"Submit Adu" and "Edit ADU" tutorials as well as notes in the "About ADU" introduction.

  • ...when your finished entering information and are satisfied with the result...click the "Submit" button and....
